What’s with Satan and the fruit in the Garden of Eden?
In response to a question asked in the “Ask a Mormon Anything” section.
Q: Mormons think the fall was necessary to bring about God’s plan, so why would Satan encourage the fall? Wouldn’t that be helping to bring about God’s plan? Wouldn’t he have tried to get Adam and Eve NOT to eat of the fruit, so no spirit children would get bodies?
Also, if God had a plan for all spirit children to come and get a body, but then sent Adam and Eve to earth telling them not to eat the fruit of the tree of … Read the rest of this entry »
Why do Mormons erroneously believe Lucifer is Satan?
The argument goes something like this:
The word “Lucifer” in Isaiah 14:12 presents a minor problem to mainstream Christianity. It becomes a much larger problem to Bible literalists, and becomes a huge obstacle for the claims of Mormonism…The first problem is that Lucifer is a Latin name…Lucifer wasn’t equated with Satan until after Jerome [in the fourth century BC]. Jerome wasn’t in error. Later Christians (and Mormons) were in equating “Lucifer” with “Satan”…Mormons claim that an ancient record (the Book of Mormon) was written beginning in about 600 BC, and the author in 600 BC supposedly copied Isaiah in … Read the rest of this entry »
First Step in Battle – Cut Communicaton Lines
I believe all Christians would agree that following God makes you happy and giving into Satan makes you miserable. So if you were Satan and your goal was to make people miserable, how would you go about it and what would you do first?
In high school I had a teacher who was in Vietnam. He told us how nobody wanted to be the guy with the radio (back then one guy in the unit carried a big radio on his back). The reason nobody wanted to be the guy with the radio was because that was the first person … Read the rest of this entry »
What Mormons believe “satanic” means
In another post Matt posted these comments about what was said by Kent P. Jackson, a professor, at BYU, a college owned and managed by the LDS Church.
Jackson says that today’s Christian churches are “apostate” Christian churches that do not have the right God, “But God is not at its head, making that church—following the appearance in it of Satan—no longer the church of God.” Jackson clarifies, “To say that Satan sits in the place of God in Christianity after the time of the Apostles is not to say that all that is in it is satanic.” However, he … Read the rest of this entry »
Do Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers?
Yes, in a sense. Mormons believe that we all lived with God before we were born on this earth. We believe that we were all “spirit children” of God (don’t ask me how God “begat” our spirits, I have no idea), and that among that population of spirit children was Satan, then known as Lucifer, and Jesus Christ, God’s firstborn spirit child. We believe that God presented a plan for how we could become like him. It involved all of us being born into this life, experiencing mortality and everything that goes along with it, and then returning to live … Read the rest of this entry »
