Why do we believe what we believe? Within the past few months I’ve had family members leave the LDS Church, friends and family who were struggling with their testimonies, and countless encounters with persons on this blog who have told me why they’ve left the Church, why they’ve stayed in it despite not having testimonies of it, why they’ve stayed in it and why they have a testimony, etc. Is it because these people have been exposed to different information? Have they had different experiences? Certainly we all have different experiences and are exposed to different information, but is that the reason for why they believe so differently?

In my own life information has made a big difference. As I’ve read, studied, and discussed matters regarding the LDS Church, Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith, etc. with others, I have gained much in the way of understanding, and my perspective on a number of things has changed.

Experiences have also changed me. Going through an LDS temple changed me. Serving as a full-time missionary in Brazil for two years changed me. Getting married and having kids changed me. Or perhaps it would be more correct to say that these experiences served as catalysts for me to effect changes in my life.

But why is it that people can be exposed to similar experiences and information and then diverge onto wildly different paths? We see this in war, where some participants who may have seemed similar before become more humble, peaceful, and introspective after enduring the hardships of war, whereas others become more hardened, stubborn, and violent. The story of Corrie ten Boom, author of The Hiding Place, comes to mind, as well as that of Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl came to the conclusion that nobody could be completely controlled, that at the core of every man there was still the freedom to choose one’s response to any external influence. Of course we may still be influenced by external stimuli, but we are not helpless.

I would put forth that it is the same in matters of faith. We are not forced to believe what we believe, although external stimuli certainly plays a role, but ultimately we choose to believe whatever it is we believe.

“But,” you might say, “the vast majority just believe what they’re taught. Just look at how people who are born Catholic, or Jewish, or Mormon grow up to believe what they’ve been taught.” Yes, that external influence is there, and in many cases it is quite strong, but people still have their choice. The LDS religion is fairly small, with roughly 14 million members, and yet another 300,000 or so people join the religion each year. And plenty leave the LDS faith each year as well. I would assume there is a fair amount of movement in and out of other religions as well.

I won’t speculate further on other religions, but when it comes to Mormonism the big question is whether it is a true religion or a false religion. Those who believe it is false hold as evidence the many crazy sounding things that Mormons believe in. Those who believe it is true claim to have received communication from God telling them it is true. The problem is that neither side seems to be able to prove their point.

Actually, this is more of a problem for “anti-Mormons” than Mormons. Mormons don’t (or at least shouldn’t) feel any pressure to prove to anyone else that Mormonism is true. From the Mormon perspective, this life is a test, and part of that test is to see what we will do when we are free to choose. In order to be free in this life, we can’t be sure what’s real. It wouldn’t be hard for God to just tell us everything. He could send an angel flying around to the major news programs, or any number of things. But if we knew with 100% certainty that there is a God, that the LDS Church is His church, that the Book of Mormon is true, etc., then it wouldn’t be that hard to know which church to join, would it? There’s more to the test than that, of course, but the point is that if God told us everything straight out, we’d all pass the test, not because we freely chose to do what He wants us to do, but because we knew exactly what we needed to do, and the horrible consequences of not doing it. This would take away a major part of what life is all about and would cause one to wonder what the purpose of life is anyway. Instead, we’re given just enough such that we’re left in doubt, but we have the opportunity to pursue God’s will if we like what little is revealed to us. And God has provided a way for each of us to prove to ourselves that we’re on the right path. He communicates with us, and thus while we cannot prove to anyone else what is true when it comes to religion, we can quite easily prove it to ourselves.

But anti-Mormons are indeed in a bit of a sticky situation. They are trying to prove that the LDS Church is false. But their only evidence is that there is nothing to prove that the LDS Church is true. Which actually isn’t even true at all, since as I mentioned, anyone can find out if the Church is true merely by asking God. There just isn’t anything out there that proves the Church to be true in an objective fashion that everyone. What anti-Mormons demand is absolute proof, undeniable proof, proof that cannot be disputed. But why should God provide such proof? It would ruin a large part of His plan, and do no good for anyone.

In truth, anti-Mormons exercise more faith than Mormons do. Mormons have an answer from God that the Church is true. Anti-Mormons have no answer from God that the LDS Church is false. Oh, I know they think they do, but it’s all subjective, circumstantial, etc. and none of what I’ve found or what has been presented to me , individually or collectively, proves anything regarding the truth of LDS doctrine. If anti-Mormons hold Mormons at fault for not having undeniable proof of the truth of Mormonism, then by their own logic they must also fault themselves, since they have not given any proof of the falseness of Mormonism that cannot be denied. Their belief that Mormonism is false is their religion, their faith, in that they act upon their belief in the hope it is true although they do not possess the proof of their hope.

Ultimately anti-Mormons believe what they believe, that the LDS Church is false, because they want it to be false. It is a choice. It is not that they have been forced to this conclusion, although they may feel this way. The forces that have influenced them in coming to this conclusion may be strong, and from their perspective completely logical. Some ex-Mormons have been abused by Church leaders, or have seen Church leaders, friends, spouses, or family members who were hypocrites. Hearing their stories, I do not wonder at their leaving the Church, and I am often impressed that they do not have more negative feelings towards the Church. But this does not mean they have no choice in the matter, only that the choice may be a significantly difficult one to make one way, while quite easy to make the other.

None of this is intended to cause contention, nor is it a means of judging those who believe Mormonism is false. As I started above, many who believe Mormonism is false are making the only rational judgment that can be made based on the information they have at hand. If I were missing a key part of the information I have, an answer from God, and I were left to nothing more than common sense, logic, and Occam’s Razor, I might very well think Mormonism were the biggest scam around. And while belief is a choice, it is not an easy choice, and I’m positive God will take every point into consideration. In the final judgment, I would not be at all surprised to see some who are today quite virulent anti-Mormons coming out quite well, while some who are today quite active members of the LDS Church faring rather poorly.

My intent is to show honest truth-seekers that they cannot rely upon any man, book, or website to convince them what is true. They may use these sources to gather information, but they cannot know whether that information is correct by any means other than by asking God and receiving communication from him.

The good news is that we are in control of our destinies. Nobody can force us to heaven or hell. We will end up where we want to be based on our choices.

Also would she be able to go to the Celestial Kingdom living with this dogmatic non-believer in the LDS church and opposition to the mormon prophets, apostles, presidents?

Ann later posted this:

I asked a question on 6/6 about my Christian friend who is anti-mormon, but married to a mormon. I have subsequently found out that his wife does have a temple recommend and does go to the temple. This sounds like an oxymoron or should I say oxymormon because there is one temple recommend question that her life violates, that is she is closely affiliated with and married to a rabid anti-mormon Christian who has his own Christian ministry on the internet and goes to mormon events to hand out Christian literature.

Can bishops just violate the temple recommend questions anytime they want to? Are the questions meant to be followed or can anyone just decide which questions they will answer truthfully and which questions they will ignore?

I answer these questions with no authority to do such, and based solely on what I think is a logical conclusion. If anyone has a different opinion they’re welcome to chime in.

1. Yes, someone who is married to an anti-Mormon can get a temple recommend.

2. Yes, someone who is married to an anti-Mormon can still go the Celestial Kingdom. It’s possible the anti-Mormon could too.

3. Yes, bishops can violate the temple recommend questions. Are they supposed to? No, but they could.

4. Yes, the questions are meant to be followed. Are they always followed? No, although I think 99% of the time they are.

5. Yes, anyone can decide which questions they will answer truthfully and which they will ignore, just as people can choose whether they want to maintain the speed limit or ignore it. What can’t be ignored are the eternal consequences of one’s decisions.

But I think the real question here is with regards to the question Ann referred to that goes something like “Do you affiliate with any group or individual whose teachings or practices are contrary to or oppose those accepted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?”

One could read this question and come to the conclusion that if someone is married to an anti-Mormon, then they are not worthy of holding a temple recommend. However, this depends on what the meaning of “affiliate” is. Again, I speak with no authority, just logic and common sense (I hope), but I assume the implied meaning of the word “affiliate” in this context is to join oneself to, agree with, support, etc. I don’t believe it means associate with, converse with, live with, sell services to, etc. In other words, you can be married to an anti-Mormon, and you’re perfectly worthy of holding a temple recommend unless you agree with him and help him distribute his pamphlets. Heck, maybe it’s even more lenient than that. I mean, if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s temple recommend is valid, then I’m not sure what it would take to be found on the wrong side of this question.

Ok, I’m joking, of course. I believe the question is not meant to cast a wide net and include a large group of people, but rather is in the interview questions in order to call out those who are actively working against the Mormon church in an organized manner. Although many of the general tenets of the Democrat Party are decidedly at odds with Mormon doctrine (not to say some Republican beliefs aren’t contrary to Mormon doctrine either), the Democrat Party does not have it as its goal the destruction of the LDS Church. There are individuals and groups that do have this as their express intent, and it would be affiliating yourself (i.e. actively supporting) to those individuals and groups that would put you on the wrong side of the question.

I believe the vast majority of those 60,500 searches are actually searches for “Mormon” and people just happened to spell it incorrectly as “Morman”. In that sense, I will agree with anyone else who believe the Morman Church is a false religion.

As of this post it has been four months since I launched this blog. The site receives just over 200 visits per month at the moment, with virtually all that traffic coming as a result of the blog ranking in Google for keywords like “mormon beliefs, “mormon culture”, “mormon myths”, “joseph smith is a fraud”, “mormon dna”, “mormons and abortion”, “where did the book of mormon come from”, “do mormons believe in evolution”, “do mormons believe they will get their own planet”, and “joseph smith education level”.

While 200 visitors is not a huge amount, relatively speaking (I have blogs dedicated to other topics that receive 10,000 visitors per month), it’s also not an insignificant number if you take into consideration the value of being able to change just one person’s mind.

I started this blog as a result of an experience in which an aquaintance of mine engaged me in a “friendly debate” on various LDS doctrines. It became clear over time that he was merely regurgitating what he had obtained from anti-Mormon sources and it seemed to me he was merely trying to steer me away from my own beliefs, as opposed to searching for the truth. However, as I would receive questions and challenges from him, I begain to enjoy the process of researching them, and I found it to be a highly educational experience that strengthened my beliefs. By the time he gave up trying to convince me of the error of my ways, we had built up quite a lengthy bit of correspondence, so I figured I had enough content to get this blog going. Since then, I’ve found inspiration for additional content by figuring out what keywords the anti-Mormons are targeting, and then targeting the same keywords by responding to their arguments.

There are a lot of negative voices out there criticizing Mormonism, and only a handful of defenders of the faith who can respond in an articulate and convincing manner. I would guess there could be many more, but the technical challenge of setting up a blog and knowing how to get it ranking in the search engines is probably more hassle than most are willing to take on. So I’d like to offer some basic guidelines here for those who may have the necessary technical skills but aren’t sure how to get started.

1. Domain Name – I chose mormondna.org because I knew it would come up well in searches for “mormon dna”, it would also come up well in searches for the word “mormon” plus anything else, and because I thought it sounded kind of cool. I chose a .org extension because I thought it might appear more official than a .com to some people.

2. Hosting and Blogging Software – I put both web hosting and blogging software in the same paragraph because these days they often come bundled together. WordPress is the blogging software you want to use. Any $5 per month web hosting service should be adequate for your needs, as long as they include WordPress as a simple installation (they might call it a “one-click” installation, meaning you press a button and it’s installed automatically).

3. WordPress Plugins – I use several WordPress plugins, including XML Sitemap, Subscribe to Comments, Post Notification, Feedburner, and Robots Meta. However, the most important plugin is going to be the All in One SEO plugin for WordPress. More than any other plugin this will aid in getting your blog up there in the search engines.

4. WordPress Settings – Some other settings are important to get right in WordPress. All in One SEO takes care of a lot of them, but another you’ll want to get right is Permalinks. You want to choose “Custom Structure” for your Permalink setting, and insert the code “/%category%/%postname%.html” (without quotes) into the field. Then, in the Category Base field, put a single period, that is “.” without the quotes. Then save your settings. This will ensure that your categories and posts are logically organized in a way that’s optimal for search engines.

There are a lot of other things I might recommend, but these are some of the most critical if you want your blog to rank well. I fear many people are under the impression that they can just go to blogger.com and set up a blog there, but that might mean getting 5 visits per month vs. 200 like my blog is getting.

More important than getting the technology right is having something to write about. If you don’t like writing, and you’re just going to siphon content from other websites, then blogging probably isn’t for you. However, if you love writing and think you could churn out a few pages per week, then a blog might be a great idea. The nice thing is that it’s fairly easy to set up and cheap to run.

If you’re serious about blogging to defend the Mormon faith but need additional help getting set up, contact me and if I can I’ll assist you in getting things set up the right way.
